Kieran's 5th Birthday Dino Party

Kieran turned five on January 9th!  To celebrate we threw him a dinosaur themed party which was a lot of fun.  I was so thankful to have my Mom here to help out.  Sadly we had bad colds a few days before the party, but decided to go ahead and keep on keeping on and it turned out splendidly.  I think everyone had a great time!  And I will never again guess the spelling of the word dinosaur.  ;)

Decorations:  My mom made these adorable dinosaurs to hang from the ceiling and we hung some spotted balloons as well that looked like dino eggs.  I made a birthday banner and cut out the letters in dinosaur paper.  Found some awesome dinosaur wall decals at the $1 tree so stuck those around too.  We also found some cute palm trees to stick on the walls and hung crepe paper and balloons.  I recycled the green pots below and found some cute wooden dinosaur cut-outs to stick inside them for the food table.

Games/Activities:  We played pin the horn on the triceratops (artwork by my Mom), an egg relay game, a dino egg scavenger hunt, and another relay game where the two teams were timed and had to construct a dinosaur skeleton from bones dug out of a box of sand.  My husband and Mom made the bones out of plaster of Paris the day before.  We also had a coloring/painting dinosaur table set up.  My Mom wrote the clues for the dinosaur scavenger hunt and they are too cute not to share.  Isn't she so creative?

Mrs. Stegasauras lost her babies' nest.
Let's help her find the eggs and give her a rest.

Diplodocus (dih-ploh-dah-kus) will give us the first clue
and help us decide just what to do.
When the brain in his head had a word to say
to the end of his tail, so far away,
A "booster brain" above his hip,
would help his brainwaves make the trip.
To help our brains grow we need to read
So let's take a look
Where we would find a ________. (book)

Anky the Ankylosaur (Ang-kil-oh-sor)
was a very cranky dinosaur.
Upon his tail there was a bump--
a great big heavy,  bony lump--
It was as strong as a knight's mace,
so you would not want to meet him face to face.
Fighting T-Rex was never a hassle;
Anky wore armour like a knight who lived in a ________. (castle)

Over the hill with an awful roar
Comes the terrible Tyrannasaur (tie-RAN-uh-sor)
Grinding his jaws as in he strides,
With a hunger pain in his big insides.
He looks for the meat,
That he likes to eat
But there's nothing fresh to be found today,
so the poor ole' geezer,
lumbers out to the garage to look in the ________.  (freezer)

Swooping low and gliding high,
Pteranodon (ter-ON-uh-don) would ride the sky,
Looking strong, black and bleak,
With an anvil head and iron beak.
While he flies distances near and far,
We prefer to drive in the ______.  (car)

The Sauropods (sore-oh-pods) take the prize for size alone.
The biggest creature Earth has known.
To nourish such enormous hulk,
They simply had to eat in bulk.
They chomped on leaves
At the top of tall trees.
The next clue if you must know,
You will find on the tree where lemons ________.  (grow)

Topper the Triceratops (tri-serr-uh-tops), a beast adorned
with frill and bill, was also horned.
Above each eye a mighty prong
Extended almost three feet long.
A beak descended from his snout
On top of which a spike stuck out.
The next clue is peeking out
From inside the long, white water ___________. (spout)

Mrs. Stegosaurus wears a double line,
of jagged body plates along her spine.
Weary and tired, she has come to say
Have you found them yet?  it's been a long day.
It is so very hard to wait
Perhaps you should walk on through the tall, white____________. (gate)

Now this must be the place
Please, oh, please make haste!
It's urgent so urgent, I must find my nest
Oh, where, oh, where do my little ones rest?
Oh my, oh my, hurry, look down,
My nest will be found upon the ground.
It's hidden from my enemies amid cactus and vine,

But maybe for us my eggs will shine.

Party Favors:  My Mom and I made some dinosaur soaps.  They were so cute and so much fun! We bought the molds, glycerin soap block and scent at hobby lobby.  My Mom found the little dinosaurs at Party City for a couple dollars and they fit perfectly into the molds.  For the three babies in attendance at the party I printed out and laminated this little dinosaur book and stuck them onto book rings.  So cute, right?  You can find the free download here .

Food:  The food was easy and it was fun coming up with dino themed names.  We just served light appetizers and cake.

 Dino-melon

Lava Punch
 Dino eggs (grapes)
 Dino claws (bugles)
 Dino bones (pretzels)
 For herbivores (veggies)
For carnivores (dino nuggets & meatballs not pictured)

Here are a few more pictures from the party.

It was a lot of work but turned out cute and was a blast!
